STRATEGIC INITIATIVE FOR CLIMATE, JUSTICE AND SUSTAINABILITY

Students working together on plant research in a greenhouse

As the new academic and intellectual home for TV's commitment to sustainability, the Strategic Initiative for Climate, Justice and Sustainability (SICJS) aims to further awareness and understanding of the environmental crisis that looms before humanity and earth, finding solutions to mitigate harm and create a more just and sustainable future. The Strategic Initiative supports existing academic centers and groups within Villanova and facilitates interdisciplinary work across colleges and departments. We aim to build a university-wide institute that fosters a uniquely Augustinian and Catholic approach to climate, justice and sustainability.

The Strategic Initiative responds to Pope Francis' call to care for our common home in Laudato Si, his encyclical on the environment.

Satis, pro omnia, in sempiternum. Enough, for all, forever.

Art & Advocacy: Creating a Deeper Connection with the Natural World

Rebecca Rutstein

Artist Talk by Rebecca Rutstein
Earth Week Keynote Speaker

Thursday, April 24, 6 p.m. in 132 Driscoll Hall

Multidisciplinary and environmentally-focused artist Rebecca Rutstein works at the intersection of art and science. Rutstein is passionate about creating visual and immersive experiences that illuminate hidden systems in the natural world to foster deeper connection and environmental stewardship in the face of our climate crisis. She will share the evolution of her practice including partnerships with oceanographers, ecologists, microbiologists, molecular scientists and planetary geologists which shape her unique perspective and broad view on the interconnectedness of nature. As an artist who has participated on eight research expeditions at sea and three deep sea dives in the Navy-owned Alvin submersible, Rutstein will delve into these experiences and address the value of interdisciplinary collaboration to solve global challenges.
