COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

Community Partnerships are reciprocal relationships between Villanova and each organization, nonprofit or school dedicated to working with the underserved or caring our environment.

While each of our community partnerships must be committed to addressing the needs of an underserved community, we also make sure that each environment provides an opportunity for our students to not only help but also achieve their own level of personal success, whatever that may be.

Additionally, each organization we partner with must have:

  • An infrastructure that can support volunteers.
  • The ability to have volunteers who work on a Higher Education Schedule without compromising their own ability to contribute.
  • A staff or faculty liaison who can maintain communication with the Office of Service Learning.
  • A perceived need which can be addressed through research or praxis.
  • A safe environment in which the students can work

Poverty and Homelessness
Note: Clearances are not necessary for these sites

  • Community building
  • : Dining room meal service
  • : Family shelter (supporting SREHUP)
  • : Meal services (Humanities course opportunity)

Domestic Abuse
Note: Requires all clearances including criminal, child abuse and FBI clearance

  • : Child care at shelter for domestic violence survivors

Adult Literacy

  • : ESL and computer literacy

Education
Note: Requires all clearances including criminal, child abuse and FBI clearance

  •  Club Of Wissahickon 
  • : Latino/Hispanic after school program 
  • : High school after school program
  • : Tutoring for high school students at Dobbins and School of the Future
  • : Tutoring bilingual students in reading and writing
  • : Mentoring and writing assignments for kids 6 – 12th grade 
  • : English language tutoring and computer coding 

Disability

  • Level: 1:1 student mentoring for Villanova students with disabilities
  •  (SPO): 1:1 and group training with disabled athletes

Ex-Offenders

  • : Literacy skills assistance for women ex-offenders

Prison Literacy

Spring Only

  • Vested: Technology and engineering programs for future engineers in underserved communities

CULTIVATING COMMUNITY

"The impact of Villanova’s Service Learning community on Centro de Cultura Arte Trabajo y Educacion (CCATE) cannot be understated. Not only have CCATE students shown academic growth and development through their interactions with Villanova students, but CCATE students, family and staff have come to see Villanova students, staff and faculty as an integral part of the community," says a representative of CCATE. The partnership started with Villanova students serving as tutors and mentors in the organization's afterschool program, but it has since expanded to include research collaborations, joint community projects and more.
