DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
English at Villanova offers undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare you to read deeply, think critically, write effectively and speak confidently.
In the Villanova English Department, you encounter both revered classics and celebrated recent work by writers coming from widely different experiences and points of view. In our classes, you hone your writing skills, sharpen your abilities to analyze complex texts, deepen your understanding of cultural and material history, and stimulate your imagination.
The abilities you develop prepare you for fields including consulting, journalism, marketing, law, education, banking, government, college administration, screenwriting and publishing, as well as continued studies in competitive master鈥檚 or doctorate programs. In addition, beyond the numerous clubs and publications affiliated with the department, we are excited to offer a variety of scholarships for our undergraduate students.
The heart of the discipline of English is the power of the written word to tell stories, communicate ideas, broaden perspectives and bring about change.

Venerable Lama Losang Samten to Create Tibetan Mandala,聽Monday-Friday, Sep. 9th-13th, Driscoll Hall Auditorium, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
From Monday, Sept. 9th through Friday, Sept. 13th, the Ven. Samten will be working on the Tibetan Mandala in the atrium of Driscoll Hall.聽Throughout the week, top scholars in the field will provide a multi-faceted glimpse into the Tibetan Buddhism and culture.
BIPOC Writing Group,聽Tuesday, Sep. 17th, 6-7:30 p.m., SAC 402
Inviting self-identified BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) students, staff, faculty, and alumni/ae to join us for creative writing and supportive community. Pizza and prompts will be provided!
Brian O鈥機onchubhair Talk: Flann O鈥橞rien: The 鈥淟ost鈥� Irish Genius,聽Monday, Sep. 23rd, SAC 300, 6:00-7:00 p.m.
Brian O'Conchubhair (University of Notre Dame), a leading scholar and translator of Irish-language literature, will discuss Flann O'Brien, one of most overlooked major writers of Irish modernism. O'Brien wrote in both Irish and English and as the journalist, Myles Na gCopaleen.

We are excited to announce that Elysha Chang will join us for a reading from her new book, A Quitter鈥檚 Paradise: A Novel. Elysha was a former VU English instructor! Location TBD, but mark your calendars for this exciting event.
Native American Studies鈥擜 Glimpse at the Falvey Collections,聽Wednesday, Sep. 25th, 12-1 p.m., Falvey Library
This Falvey Forum Workshop introduces Falvey's new Native American Studies research guide and provides guidance on best practices to locate Native American voices and perspectives in the Library's collections.
